Historic Sur-e Esrafil newspaper display in Tabriz.

Sur-e Esrafil display, Constitution House of Tabriz.

Sur-e Esrafil was part of the vibrant press culture surrounding Iran's Constitutional Revolution. Associated with editor Mirza Jahangir Khan Shirazi, it linked journalism, political criticism and constitutional debate at a formative moment in Iranian public life. The image reminds us that freedom of expression has an Iranian history as well as a universal claim.
